When reading this myth what I found particularly interesting was not the myth itself but the contradictory actions that the Chinese communist party (Peoples Republic of China) took.  Their purge of all religious affiliation in (196-1976) was radical yet Kuan Yin the goddess of compassion is seen as so central to the Chinese people that the Peoples Republic of China built a 108 meter statue to her in 2005.

  1. I think this is an interesting point;I feel that the act of building a statue to Kuan Yin was done out of necessity. People would not be content to have a deity so central to their lives eradicated and forgotten; and while seemingly contradictory to their goals, it is likely the discontent in China following the religious purge was so great the Government was forced to reach a compromise.
