I find it quite interesting to see the difference between the ideas of Carl Jung and Otto Rank, and how they effected the work of Joseph Campbell. Otto Rank believed that to understand what it is to be human, you have to look at the male aspects of human nature, while Jung believed that they should focus on the more female aspects. I don’t know too much about their works and the textbook gave only a very simple outline about them, but to me it seems that if you trying to understand what is important about being human…shouldn’t you focus on all aspects? How can hope to find what it is to be human by looking at only half?

That is why I like how Campbell was able to take both into consideration and apply both to his work by saying that the two aspects are important. It is flexible in saying that roles can be switched by the hero being either man or women, but that is not always the case.
